A Simple Way to Enhance Attention and Brain Function Found

Regular exercise enhances brain activity.

Regular exercise can enhance the positive impact of physical activity on brain function. This conclusion was reached by researchers at University College London. The results of the study were published in the journal Brain Research (BR).

The experiment involved 30 untrained adults who engaged in cycling workouts three times a week for 12 weeks. The scientists measured their fitness levels and analyzed changes in the brain, as well as the level of the protein BDNF — a substance that helps form new neurons and connections between brain cells.

It turned out that as the participants' physical fitness improved, their brains began to respond more strongly to physical exertion. After workouts, they released more BDNF than before the program began. This protein is associated with learning processes, concentration, and maintaining the health of nerve cells.

Changes were also observed in the prefrontal cortex of the brain — the area responsible for attention, emotional control, and decision-making. In tests, participants showed signs of more effective functioning of these abilities. According to the scientists, the results indicate that the better a person's physical fitness, the more even a short workout can enhance attention and brain function.
