Regularly skipping breakfast increases the risk of metabolic syndrome.

Regularly skipping breakfast has been linked to an increased risk of developing metabolic syndrome — a condition characterized by simultaneous disturbances in sugar and fat metabolism, elevated blood pressure, and increased waist circumference. This conclusion was reached by researchers from Ningxia Medical University after analyzing data from 15,959 residents of Northwest China aged 35 to 74. The study was published in Frontiers in Nutrition.

Participants were surveyed about their lifestyle and dietary habits, and laboratory tests were conducted. It was found that those who skipped breakfast four times a week or more had approximately a 25 percent higher likelihood of having metabolic syndrome compared to those who regularly ate breakfast. The association was particularly pronounced in men and individuals with excess body weight.

Additionally, frequent skipping of the morning meal was associated with specific components of the syndrome: elevated fasting blood sugar, hypertension, and reduced levels of 'good' cholesterol. Even after accounting for age, sex, and other lifestyle factors, this association persisted.

The authors emphasize that the study is observational and does not prove a direct causal relationship. However, the findings suggest that a regular breakfast may be a simple factor associated with a more favorable metabolic profile and potentially lower risk of developing diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.
