Chia seeds are dangerous when combined with blood pressure medications.
Gastroenterologist Ekaterina Titova stated that chia seeds can be dangerous for some people. The doctor explained that chia seeds can pose a serious risk when combined with other medications. For example, in hypertensive patients, they enhance the effect of blood pressure-lowering medications. According to Titova, this can lead to bleeding or dangerously low blood pressure.
Additionally, they can be dangerous when combined with blood-thinning medications. The gastroenterologist also urged diabetics to consult a doctor before including chia seeds in their diet.
The doctor added that this product should not be eaten raw and simply washed down with water. She explained that when they enter the stomach and then the intestines, the seeds absorb water and can cause bloating, constipation, pain, and sometimes intestinal obstruction in some people.
Titova recommended soaking the seeds in water, kefir, or yogurt for at least 15-30 minutes before consumption. According to her, for the first time, it is enough to take one teaspoon. If there are no negative symptoms, the product will benefit the intestinal microflora and provide the body with healthy fats—omega-3.
