Endocrinologist: diabetes can develop in thin people.

Diabetes can occur not only in people with excess weight, said endocrinologist and dietitian at Soft Medical Center Yulia Sidorova.

“Thin people can develop diabetes — most often type one. This is an autoimmune destruction of the beta cells of the pancreas, and weight has nothing to do with it. It most often begins in childhood or adolescence, as well as in young adults,” Sidorova warned.

The endocrinologist added that thin people can also have type two diabetes. According to her, those who lead a sedentary lifestyle are at particular risk. Additionally, women of any body type can develop gestational diabetes during pregnancy.

The doctor emphasized that alarming signs of this disease can include intense thirst and dry mouth, frequent urination, rapid weight loss without dietary changes, weakness, a smell of acetone from the mouth, and a rapid deterioration in condition.

She noted that the insidiousness of diabetes lies in the fact that its onset can be easily overlooked. The endocrinologist explained that many attribute its symptoms to stress, weather, or academic workload.
