British actress Helen Mirren admitted that at the beginning of her career she faced advice to change her appearance for success, but consciously refused plastic surgery and does not consider it an obstacle to professional fulfillment.
The 80-year-old Oscar winner gave an interview to Elle magazine, in which she shared that more than fifty years ago, one of the directors told her that without rhinoplasty, she allegedly would not be able to build a career in film. According to Mirren, there was no direct pressure, but the message was clear. The actress responded with a refusal, emphasizing that she did not aspire to fit the image of a 'beautiful actress' and preferred to remain herself.
Mirren noted that she does not judge people who choose to undergo plastic surgery. In her opinion, if changes in appearance help a person feel more confident, it is a personal choice for each individual. However, the actress believes it is a mistake to have such surgeries at a young age when appearance is still developing and continues to change.
Reflecting on the pressure of modern beauty standards, Mirren emphasized that the desire to look like 'another person' can lead to disappointment. In a joking manner, she added that sometimes good lighting in the bathroom is enough for self-confidence — this, she said, is much cheaper than a facelift.
