Dentist: matcha tea stains tooth enamel more than coffee.
Dentist Ekaterina Tsybina warned that matcha tea stains tooth enamel more than coffee.
According to the doctor, the reason is that matcha tea is not an infusion, but a powder mixed with water or milk. "The fine particles of the powder with a high concentration of pigments linger longer on the surface of the teeth, especially at their necks and in the interproximal spaces, and adhere to the thin protein film in this area. This makes the plaque denser and more noticeable," explained the dentist.
She stated that tannins and chlorophyll play a key role in this process — these compounds are abundant in matcha, which is why the pigments quickly adhere to the teeth and become the basis for staining. The doctor called matcha a drink that stains teeth more than coffee and emphasized that in this regard, this tea is only surpassed by red wine.
Moreover, as the doctor noted, on light enamel, the greenish-yellow tint of the tea is more noticeable than the brown tone after a short contact with coffee.
