Latvian public media (LSM) is consulting with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and the Council of European Public Media (SEPLP) to make a decision regarding voting on Israel's participation in the Eurovision contest, LETA was informed by LSM's head of corporate communications, Raina Anna Lochmele.
She emphasized that Latvia's participation in Eurovision has always been an opportunity to present the country at one of the most viewed music events in the world and has provided a platform for local artists to make a name for themselves on an international level. This year, in preparation for the national selection "Supernova," a significant number of song submissions were received, confirming the interest and desire of musicians to represent Latvia on the big stage.
At the same time, she noted that holding the Eurovision Song Contest next year, like other international events, raises questions and discussions in many European countries. Therefore, the organizers of "Supernova" are carefully assessing the situation and consulting with the EBU and SEPLP to make a decision regarding voting on Israel's participation in the contest.
It was previously reported that in recent weeks, pressure has been mounting on the song contest organizers to disqualify Israel, citing Israel's military operation in the Gaza Strip. In particular, public broadcasters from Spain and the Netherlands threatened to withdraw from Eurovision if Israel is allowed to compete.
At the end of September, the EBU announced that it would hold an online meeting of representatives from member broadcasters in November to vote on the issue of participation in the 2026 song contest, which is set to take place in May in Vienna.
