Why a Dog is More Beneficial than Wine and Chocolate

Red wine and chocolate are often said to be good for health (of course, in moderation). But a study in Missouri proved that just 15 minutes of interaction with one's own dog can bring more benefits to the body than sweets or a glass of wine. And with no sugar or alcohol involved.

The Experiment that Showed the Power of Dog Friendship

The study involved one hundred people: half were dog owners, and half were without pets. Participants spent 15 minutes in three different scenarios:

  • with their own dog;
  • with a stranger's dog;
  • with a robotic dog.

During all sessions, people petted and scratched the dog, and blood pressure was measured every five minutes. Blood samples were also taken before and after the interaction.

The results are impressive: for people interacting with their own dog, blood pressure dropped by an average of 10% in just a quarter of an hour. Interacting with a stranger's dog or a robot did not provide such an effect.

How Dogs Improve Mood

Interacting with one's own pet increased serotonin levels—the happiness hormone. At the same time, a stranger's dog had no effect, while the robot even lowered serotonin levels.

Since low serotonin is associated with depression, it can be said that dogs are natural antidepressants. We relax and enjoy their company—almost like eating a bar of chocolate, but safer and healthier.

Health and Activity with a Dog

Dogs help not only with mental health. Pet owners are generally more active and healthier: walks and play with a dog stimulate physical activity, prevent hypodynamia, and help maintain fitness.

Thus, regular interaction with a dog is not only joy and pleasure but also real benefits for the heart, blood vessels, and mood.
