Fans of FX's historical drama hit 'Shōgun' have received the long-awaited news — work on the second season has officially entered an active phase. The project, which has become one of the most awarded series in recent years, is already in production.
FX has confirmed that production for the second season began in 2026. Principal photography started on February 2 in Vancouver. This information was confirmed by the channel's official social media, which published a short behind-the-scenes video with a caption about returning to the set and the beginning of a new chapter in the story.
The launch of production was initially planned as part of the expansion of the series' universe following the unexpected success of the first season, which became a global hit.
One of the main changes will be a significant time jump — the events of the second season will unfold approximately 10 years after the finale of the first part. The creators of the project note that this will allow for the depiction of a new political reality and a shift in the balance of power among key characters.
According to the showrunners, viewers can expect more expansive storylines, including major military conflicts and a more complex dramatic structure.
Returning to their roles will be:
-
Hiroyuki Sanada (Lord Toranaga), who is also serving as an executive producer;
-
Cosmo Jarvis (John Blackthorne);
-
a number of actors from the first season.
New performers from Japan have also joined the cast, including Masataka Kubota, Asami Mizukawa, and others. The expansion of the cast is related to the new phase of the story and the changing political landscape of the plot.
The first season of 'Shōgun' was a true triumph for FX: 18 Emmy Awards, a win in the category of 'Outstanding Drama Series,' and several Golden Globe Awards. The project has also gone down in history as one of the most successful international series featuring the Japanese language and cultural foundation.
The creators have already stated that the second season will go beyond the literary source material and will be based on real historical events in Japan. This means that the plot will be entirely original and will continue the development of characters in a new historical context.
The premiere of the new season is expected in 2027.
