The Latvian National Museum of Nature will hold a Family Day dedicated to the Animal of the Year 2026 — the Common Toad

This week, the Latvian National Museum of Nature will host the first Family Day of 2026, where children and adults can get acquainted with the Animal of the Year – the Common Toad. The event "The Mysterious Animal of the Year. How Unusual is the Common Toad?" will take place on Saturday, January 31, from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

The Common Toad (Bufo bufo) is one of the largest amphibians in Latvia. During the spring migration, the toad is at risk from traffic, but if it is lucky, it can live up to 40 years. On Family Day, a special workbook with tasks and thematic stations dedicated to various facts about the Animal of the Year from the museum's zoological exhibits will be prepared.

Children aged 5 to 12 and their parents will be invited to learn the secrets of the toad's life: how to distinguish a toad from a frog, how many different species of toads inhabit different parts of the world, what toads eat, and what they need to protect themselves from. Museum staff will assist in solving these tasks. Each participant in Family Day will also be able to take part in a creative workshop.
