On January 31 at 11:00, everyone is invited to a free tour of the Bauska Town Hall.
The Bauska Town Hall was built in the early 17th century. Until 1740, it was considered the largest in the Duchies of Courland and Semigallia and one of the largest in Latvia.
The Town Hall was a stone building with an arcade on the elongated eastern side and a half-timbered tower with a dome and spire. The facades were decorated modestly: volutes were placed at the lower part of the triangular pediments, and the corners of the building were adorned with rustication. The cellar stored wine, the first floor housed the apartments of officials and the city scales, while the second floor contained the meeting hall and magistrate's offices. The bell in the tower alerted residents to important events.
In 1852, the deteriorating tower was demolished, and in 1871, the second floor was removed. The remaining part of the building was remodeled and rented out as shops. In this simplified form, the Town Hall has survived to this day. Subsequently, the Bauska District Council implemented a restoration project, and today the restored building can be seen.
During the tour, you will be able to view the interior decoration of the Town Hall, learn about the history of the building, architectural details, and interesting facts about its role in the life of the city of Bauska over the centuries.
The tour is suitable for both locals and visitors to the city who wish to learn more about the cultural and historical heritage of Bauska.
Admission is free.
