In 2026, the film "Michael" will be released worldwide — a large-scale biopic of one of the most influential pop performers in history. The lead role in the film is played by the musician's nephew, Jaafar Jackson. The project features almost no well-known actors, and director Antoine Fuqua notes that his task is to portray the hero without idealization, but also not to reduce the narrative to an accusatory investigation. Here’s what is already known about the film.
What the film is about
The film tells the creative journey of Michael Jackson, starting with his participation in the family group The Jackson 5, which also included brothers Jermaine, Tito, Jackie, and Marlon. The group performed music in the genres of R&B, soul, pop, and disco and quickly gained popularity, largely thanks to Michael, who was the lead vocalist.
The biopic covers key stages of the artist's life. In the official synopsis, the film is described as a candid portrait of an outstanding yet controversial figure who became the "King of Pop." However, it remains unclear how thoroughly the creators will address the most complex and dark aspects of his biography, including allegations of sexual misconduct against children, which became the subject of the 2019 documentary "Leaving Neverland."
The first teaser was presented in early November. In it, viewers see a young Michael in a recording studio, followed by footage illustrating the rapid rise of his career: packed stadiums, large-scale dance numbers, and the filming of the iconic music video for Thriller. The film will feature about thirty songs by Michael Jackson.
The film is set to be released in April 2026.
