Released in the summer on Netflix, the animated film 'K-Pop Demon Hunters' about a trio of girls who fight ancient evil with their music has been named Breakthrough of the Year by Time magazine.
The article dedicated to the animated film notes that such bold hopes were never placed on the project. Let us remind you that the original animated film, with no ties to well-known franchises, became the most-watched film on Netflix, was praised by critics, and warmly received by audiences.
It is clear that the success of the project lay not so much in tapping into the trend of Korean culture (dramas, 'Squid Game', a new wave of interest in Korean thrillers) but in how well this was executed.
The production was handled by Sony Pictures Animations, known for the successful animated 'Spider-Man' franchise. The director's chair was taken by Chris Appelhans, who previously gifted audiences the animated film 'Wish Dragon' in collaboration with debutante Maggie Kan.
One of the advantages of the animated film is the translation of the classic confrontation between good and evil into the realm of creative competition. Without going into spoilers, the main heroines maintain a certain barrier against evil forces with their music, upholding an ancient tradition; however, this time the evil forces themselves form a boy band to battle the unbeatable trio on their turf. And here the creators gave it their all; the music in the animated film is stunning.
After such a staggering success, the animated film is literally destined for a sequel, which, however, will only be released in 2029.
