Men in Black Returns: Sony Pictures Takes on the Fifth Film

The main news is that the studio is struggling to bring Will Smith back to the role of James or Agent J. Chris Bremmer, who worked with the actor on "Bad Boys for Life," has already been hired to write the script.

At the same time, Deadline notes that Smith is not officially attached to the project and will not take on any commitments until he reads the script. A director has not yet been announced, nor has a potential plot. It is unlikely that we should hope for the return of 79-year-old Tommy Lee Jones.

The "Men in Black" franchise has earned a total of $1.9 billion at the global box office. It started back in 1997 with the story of a grumpy New York police officer (Smith) recruited into a secret agency that monitors aliens. The 2002 sequel received widespread criticism, but "Men in Black 3" in 2012 brought back some of the charm of the original.

The 2019 reboot "Men in Black: International," already without Smith, effectively killed the franchise and made it seem like, who needs another film? But Hollywood seems to be stuck in an endless cycle of franchises, as there is always something to reimagine, reboot, or continue.
