During a scientific expedition near the Galapagos Islands, researchers discovered a new species of octopus with an unusual bright blue color. The creature was found at a depth of nearly 1800 meters using a remotely operated underwater vehicle.

A small octopus, slightly larger than a golf ball, immediately caught the attention of scientists. Specialists from the Charles Darwin Foundation sought assistance from invertebrate expert Janet Voight from the Field Museum of Chicago. According to the researchers, the creature's appearance was significantly different from known species inhabiting this part of the Pacific Ocean, as reported by Entrevue.

After extracting the octopus, it was preserved and sent to the United States for further study. To avoid damaging the rare specimen, scientists used X-ray imaging instead of traditional dissection.

The analyses confirmed that this is a previously unknown species belonging to the genus Microeledone. The discovery was a surprise for biologists, as the family Megaleledonidae had previously been primarily associated with the cold waters of Antarctica.

Scientists suggest that the bright blue coloration may help the octopus camouflage or protect itself in deep-sea conditions.

The discovery of a new species of blue octopus serves as yet another reminder of how little humanity knows about the depths of the world's oceans. Researchers believe that dozens, if not hundreds, of unknown species may be hiding in unexplored areas of the ocean floor.
