Ten Secret Signals Your Cat is Trying to Tell You

Many believe that dogs are more emotional than cats, but in reality, we just do not always understand the signals our furry friends are sending.

Cats are strong and independent creatures, but they constantly show their affection. It is important to know what to pay attention to. How to properly interpret your cat's behavior is explained by animal behavior specialist Lily Chin in her book "Cat Language: A Guide to Communicating with Your Cat."

The cat marks the furniture.

Although this may seem like undesirable behavior, it usually indicates stress or insecurity in the cat. There may be changes happening in the home, such as renovations or the arrival of a new family member. By spreading its scent, the cat is trying to regain a sense of comfort at home.

The cat rubs its face against furniture or kneads a blanket.

There are special glands located on the pads and face of the cat that help leave marks on objects. This behavior indicates that the cat feels comfortable and cozy in your home.

Whiskers forward.

Even slight movements of the whiskers can indicate the cat's mood. If the whiskers are extended forward, it means the cat is curious and excited.

Whiskers back.

When the whiskers are pointing back and gathered together, it may mean that your pet is feeling anxious or subdued. In this case, it is better to pet them to calm them down.

The tail is quivering.

If the cat greets you or rubs against your legs, and the tip of its tail is vibrating, this is a sign of happiness. This is a great moment to play with it or pet it.

Ears pinned back.

If the cat's ears are pinned back, it may mean that it is scared or anxious. In this case, it is better not to disturb it and leave it alone, removing the source of stress.

Crouching down, tail tucked.

This behavior also indicates anxiety: the cat feels danger and is uncomfortable.

Head at shoulder level.

If the cat is moving forward with its head at shoulder level and its tail arched high, this is a sign of relaxation. In this state, you will not see tension in its body or face.

Body crouched to the ground, neck extended.

If your cat is crouched down and alert, it is likely watching something interesting, such as a bird or a mouse. If this is happening indoors, it is simply preparing to play, estimating the distance to the object.

Crouching and pulling in the head.

When a cat is scared, it may crouch down and pull its head into its shoulders, pressing its paws to the ground and dilating its pupils.
