Atlas Bowerbird: A Bird with Amazing Purple Eyes

The Atlas Bowerbird is the only known wild animal with strikingly purple eyes, and this color plays an important role in its courtship behavior.

Native to the wet forests of eastern Australia, this species owes its name (violaceus) to the glossy purple plumage of the males, which they acquire only at 5–7 years of age, replacing their juvenile green-brown coloration.

Females and young individuals remain inconspicuous. Mature males spend most of the year alone, only to impress females during the breeding season with a complex ritual. The male constructs a bower from twigs with two parallel walls and decorates it with bright blue objects — from petals and shells to plastic bottle caps.

When a female appears, he performs a dance and displays his purple eyes and feathers, which serve as an honest signal of health and genetic quality: it is believed that such a bright trait requires good physical condition. The female, after evaluating the performance, leaves to build a nest and incubate 1–3 large eggs alone.

While other birds may have red, yellow, or multicolored eyes, the rich purple color of the iris in the bowerbird remains a unique phenomenon in the animal kingdom.
