Urban birds are usually capable of finding food on their own, so feeding them is not always necessary.
According to veterinarian D. Blumentrans, human intervention is justified only in adverse weather conditions — for example, during severe frosts, heavy snowfall, or icy conditions.
Even in such situations, it is important to be careful about what is offered to the birds. The expert emphasized that birds should not be given salty, smoked, and fried dishes, as well as food with spices. Such food disrupts the water-salt balance and creates additional stress on the internal organs. Moreover, it can cause digestive disorders and even poisoning.
The veterinarian specifically warned against feeding birds bread. According to him, this product can cause fermentation processes and does not provide the body with the necessary nutrients. Moldy bread is even more dangerous — it can lead to severe intoxication.
Instead, the specialist recommends choosing more suitable food: raw unsalted seeds, grains, or special bird feed. In cold weather, insect-eating species can sometimes be offered a small piece of unsalted lard.
Another important point is to avoid the accumulation of a large number of birds in one place. Such situations contribute to the spread of infections and can pollute the environment.
According to the veterinarian, the main rule of feeding is to do no harm. Many urban birds are well adapted to living near humans, so assistance from people should be cautious and reasonable.
