Tiny Fluffy Ball: The Deadliest Cat on the Planet

The black-footed cat is the smallest and possibly the most vulnerable predator in Africa. Weighing up to 2.5 kg and with a record hunting efficiency (more successful than a lion), it leads a secretive nocturnal lifestyle and hides in burrows during the day.

A new study has shown that the survival of the species critically depends on springhares: it is their abandoned burrows that females use to raise kittens, changing shelters almost daily to avoid predators. Radio monitoring and lidar have recorded that without these burrows, females become significantly more vulnerable.

The problem is that the range of Felis nigripes overlaps 90% with private farms, where springhares can be hunted, and the cats themselves can be accidentally poisoned in the fight against jackals. Low reproductive capacity (a maximum of two kittens per year) and widespread amyloidosis make the population of about 10,000 individuals extremely sensitive to losses.

The only way to save this miniature predator is to preserve its "architects" and convince farmers that a cat that does not harm livestock deserves attention and protection.
