This winter, under the influence of severe frosts, bee mortality may significantly increase in weak and small bee colonies, said the chairman of the board of the Latvian Beekeepers Association (LBB), Valters Brusbardis.
He explained that for successful wintering, bees must form a tight cluster, and with quality feed, bee colonies are technically capable of maintaining warmth in the hive during the winter period.
Referring to previous experiences and research by Swedish colleagues, Brusbardis noted that in cold weather, weaker and smaller colonies may perish, and in harsh winters, bee mortality significantly increases compared to milder seasons.
Prolonged cold below -10 degrees, if such temperatures persist for more than a month, particularly negatively affects bee survival.
At the same time, he emphasized that it is currently impossible to accurately assess the condition of bee colonies, and comprehensive conclusions can only be made in the spring.
