In a recent study, specialists identified a list of the most frequently occurring ailments in cats, reports the Daily Mail.
Data was collected on 18,249 cats in Britain. Among them, the most common breeds were British Shorthair, Ragdoll, Bengal, Maine Coon, Persian, and Siamese.
As a result, it was found that cats were diagnosed with at least one disease per year. However, older males were more likely to have a range of ailments.
The most common issue was gum disease, followed by obesity, general dental diseases, ingrown nails, fleas, heart murmurs, anorexia, conjunctivitis, and cystitis.
At the same time, males and females showed different probabilities of developing 14 out of the 30 most common ailments.
It was found that females had a higher likelihood of wound complications after surgeries, excessive grooming, hypersensitivity to flea bites, hyperthyroidism, and ingrown nails.
Males were more prone to gum disease, obesity, heart murmurs, lameness, and injuries from bites by other cats. They were also more likely to be involved in traffic accidents.
Pets younger than 8 years old were more likely to suffer from fleas, traffic accidents, bites from other cats, and wound complications after surgeries. Older animals had an increased likelihood of developing 23 common diseases, including cystitis, lameness, and heart murmurs.
