Veterinarian Vera Milyutina reminds that live coniferous trees (fir, pine, spruce) release toxic essential oils and resins that can cause poisoning, gastritis, and discomfort.
Artificial fir trees can also pose a risk of physical injury to the stomach or intestines and may cause obstruction.
If your pet has eaten the needles, the expert recommends inducing vomiting in cats or dogs at home by giving them carbonated mineral water or Coca-Cola. Important: in case of serious symptoms (persistent vomiting, weakness, loss of appetite), you should immediately consult a veterinarian.
According to the veterinarian, there is no significant difference in the reaction of cats and dogs to needles. However, larger animals may cope with the incident more easily and less noticeably than smaller ones.
The consequences can vary widely – from temporary malaise lasting a few days to complex surgical operations to remove foreign bodies from the intestines.
