Ostriches are astonishing animals. These cunning birds have managed to survive while being hunted by the most dangerous predators on Earth. These birds are much more complex than they may seem.
Several interesting facts about these feathered creatures:
-
Before humans began to massively exterminate ostriches, they were found in Africa, Asia, and the Arabian Peninsula. Currently, they inhabit only the African forests and savannas south of the Sahara.
-
An ostrich can weigh up to 145 kg and stand 3 m tall, with a significant part of that height attributed to their strong legs.
-
They possess the largest eyes of all terrestrial fauna. The diameter of one eye is approximately 5 cm — even larger than the ostrich's brain.
-
They are the fastest bipeds on the planet. In short bursts, they can reach speeds of up to 70 km/h. Their endurance is even more impressive: they can run at 48 km/h for 16 km at a time.
-
These feathered creatures use their wings as rudders to maneuver their bodies while moving at high speeds.
