Lazzy, the oldest blue penguin (Eudyptula minor) in the world, celebrated his 25th birthday at the Cincinnati Zoo (USA).
For little blue penguins, such an age is indeed impressive: in captivity, they usually live less than 20 years, while in the wild, they live about 10. Lazzy became the first representative of the species hatched at this zoo in 2000. The institution, which houses the largest colony of blue penguins in North America, attributes its pet's longevity to quality care.
Despite his age, Lazzy still actively keeps up with the younger members of the colony at Ru Valley.
Blue penguins reach about 30 cm in height and weigh just over 1 kg. Their ancestor may be the extinct Eudyptula wilsonae, whose fossils, dating back about 3 million years, were discovered in Australia.
