Does deportation from the EU threaten Ukrainians after the war: expert explanation

In 2027, the temporary protection regime for Ukrainians in the EU will cease to be in effect one way or another.

In Europe, right-wing populists like to talk about the need to deport Ukrainian refugees. However, even after the war ends, there will be no mass deportations, said Vasily Voskoboynik, head of the non-governmental organization "Office of Migration Policy," in a comment to "Kiev24."

"No one will be returning anyone anywhere. Conditions will be created where people either voluntarily stay in one or another country in Europe, or they will voluntarily return back to Ukraine. Physically deporting someone or forcing them to return to Ukraine - that will not actually happen," the expert stated.

Voskoboynik also noted that the special temporary protection regime for Ukrainians in the EU, which was introduced in 2022 due to the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation, will expire in March 2027.

"The ability for Ukrainians to be in Europe without restrictions precisely because we are at war - this will end," he said.

Temporary protection regime for Ukrainians in the EU

As reported by UNIAN, in July, the European Union extended the temporary protection regime for Ukrainians until March 4, 2027.

At the same time, it seems that the EU does not plan to extend this temporary regime for subsequent periods, even if the war does not end by March 2027. In particular, recommendations have already been developed on how EU countries should deal with Ukrainian refugees after this date.
