If you are choosing a dog and want to spend as much time as possible with your furry friend, it is worth knowing the average lifespan of different breeds.
British specialists have determined how the lifespan of our smaller brothers depends on breed, head shape, and body size. The study examined data from over 500,000 dogs of 155 different breeds.
On average, dogs live for 12.5 years. Depending on the breed, this figure can vary from 5.4 to 15.4 years.
At the top of the ranking are the Lancashire Heeler (15.4 years), Tibetan Spaniel (15.2), Shiba Inu (14.6), Continental Toy Spaniel (14.5), and Lakeland Terrier (14.2).
At the bottom of the ranking are the Caucasian Shepherd (5.4 years), Canary Mastiff (7.7), Cane Corso (8.1), Mastiff (9.0), and Saint Bernard (9.3). All five of these dog breeds are large, and specialists concluded that they have a 20% higher risk of early death compared to small dogs.
Furthermore, the study showed that, in addition to body size, gender and muzzle shape also affect lifespan.
It was found that male dogs live on average 0.3 years less than females. Additionally, flat-faced dogs (French Bulldogs, Pugs) suffer from various diseases 40 percent more often, which, accordingly, affects their lifespan.
