A Mass Invasion of Poisonous Ants Recorded in Australia

A mass spread of the invasive fire ant — one of the most dangerous and aggressive ant species in the world — has been recorded in Australia.

Specialized search dogs have discovered new nests at five mining sites in central Queensland, just six weeks after the first detection of the insects at the Broadmeadow coal mine.

The spread of the species is linked to the transportation of construction materials over long distances — about 800 kilometers, which significantly complicates control and eradication efforts. Authorities have intensified monitoring and are conducting large-scale operations to eliminate colonies: insecticides are being introduced into the nests and surrounding areas are being treated.

The ants are actively spreading due to human activity, hiding in soil, plants, and machinery, and then establishing new colonies. The favorable climate of Australia promotes their rapid reproduction and expansion into larger territories. Experts predict that fire ants could spread across 97% of the continent, including meadows, pastures, and urban outskirts.

The danger of these insects lies not only in the damage to ecosystems, where they displace native species, but also in the threat they pose to humans and animals. Their bites cause severe pain and can lead to anaphylactic shock, requiring immediate medical attention.
