How do jellyfish hunt without teeth and a brain?

Jellyfish have neither a brain, nor bones, nor even familiar sensory organs, yet they remain one of the most successful creatures inhabiting the ocean. How do they manage to feed?

Most jellyfish obtain food using stinging tentacles covered with special cells called cnidocytes. These cells shoot microscopic harpoons, injecting venom into small animals such as copepods, plankton, and fish larvae. Once the prey is paralyzed, oral appendages move it to the mouth, usually located in the center of the bell.

Many jellyfish, particularly scyphozoans, have four oral appendages surrounding a single opening that serves both for food intake and waste expulsion.

Despite their simple structure, jellyfish possess a developed nerve net and small sensory structures that allow them to detect light and movement. This helps them navigate and locate concentrations of prey in the water column.
