When you look at your cat, you don't know what's going on in its head. However, understanding its mood is very important for keeping your pet healthy and happy. But how can you understand the emotions of an animal?
Scientists believe that a cat's emotional behavior can be read through two signs: signals aimed at reducing distance (purring, "come closer") and signals that indicate the cat is trying to increase the distance between you.
It is important to pay attention to all parts of the cat's body and the speed at which actions occur. For example, slow blinking is a sign of relaxation (and it's a good idea to blink slowly in response), while rapid blinking with squinted eyes is a sign of fear.
Essentially, the more open your cat's body position is, the less stress it is experiencing. A cat lying on its side or back with its legs stretched out, tail relaxed, and belly exposed is very relaxed and feels safe.
When to Back Off from Your Cat
Signs that your cat wants you to stay away include tail swishing, puffed-up fur, a lowered body (as if trying to become invisible), limbs and tail tightly pressed against the body, hissing, and a drawn-out "meow." In such cases, it's better not to approach the pet, as it may start to defend itself.
Instead, give it space. If you were petting the cat, it's best to stop. It's always better to let the cat come to you and give it the choice to interact with you or not.
How to Determine if Your Cat Is Upset
Cats can become upset because they are bored, unable to access what they need (such as food or a bird they can see through the window), or unhappy about being in a certain place. Signs of frustration include destruction and attempts to escape, as well as frequent meowing, pacing back and forth, and frequent rubbing against objects.
In such situations, cats will be highly agitated, swishing their tails. Be very cautious with a cat in this state, as you may be at risk of being bitten — in this case, you are not the cause of the aggression, but the pet simply needs to express its dissatisfaction somehow.
