Scientists are convinced that spiders dream

A 2022 study showed that European jumping spiders (Evarcha arcuata) exhibit activity during sleep reminiscent of the REM phase — a stage of sleep associated with dreaming in mammals.

Researchers observed the movements of the eye tubes in young individuals with transparent exoskeletons and recorded regular twitching of the legs and abdomen, characteristic of REM sleep.

Similar motor patterns were found in adult spiders. This is the first direct evidence of the presence of the REM phase in terrestrial arthropods. Although such data do not directly confirm the presence of dreams, researchers suggest that spiders likely dream — similar to domestic animals like cats and dogs.

Daniela Rößler from the Max Planck Institute for Animal Behavior noted that after observing hundreds of spiders, the scientists had no doubt about their dreaming, although confirming this through strict scientific means is currently impossible.
