From the beginning of this year until mid-September, 987 animals have been hit on the roads in Latvia, which is 42.2% more than in the same period last year, reported representatives of VSIA "Latvijas valsts ceļi" (LVC).
LVC explains that each year during the hunting season, which lasts from April 1 to March 31, nearly 2000 large and small wild animals, as well as several birds, are registered as being hit.
Data from the State Forest Service (VMD) shows that this year the number of registered wild animal collisions has increased. Latvia is home to more than 200,000 roe deer, and by mid-September this year, 549 roe deer have been hit, which is 39.3% more than in the same period last year. At the same time, 91 deer were hit during this period, which is 13.8% more than in the same period last year.
Ilgvars Zihmanis, senior advisor of the hunting department at the State Forest Service, reports that 987 animal incidents have been registered this hunting season, including small animals and birds. Among them, 760 cases were related to large herbivores — moose, deer, roe deer, and wild boars. In the previous season, up to mid-September, 600 large herbivores were hit.
Upon seeing a hit animal on the road, residents should call the emergency number 112. Rescue service staff will inform the responsible authorities — VMD and LVC. At the same time, the incident can also be reported to VMD, including through the mobile application "Medni."
LVC also receives calls about animals on and near roads, including live animals close to the road, as well as domestic animals. LVC emphasizes that in autumn, animals are more frequently encountered on roads as moose and deer enter their mating season.
