Strawberries are delicate berries, and every gardener knows how difficult it is to keep them intact during transportation.
There is a clever way to keep berries a little longer without using a vinegar solution. However, there are a few nuances to consider.
Which Strawberries Last Longer
Many gardeners prefer to pick berries in the morning.
This has its pros and cons. If the dew has already dried, the strawberries will last longer, but they may be less sweet.
When picking berries in the evening, they have time to fully ripen and will be dry, but due to overripe fruits, the storage time may be reduced.
What’s the Secret?
The secret is that for long-term storage, strawberries should be placed not in a bucket or basket, but directly into an airtight container.
It is recommended to place a paper towel or napkins at the bottom of the container, and then carefully lay the berries in a single layer. It’s better if the stems remain attached.
Each layer of berries should be separated by napkins, and it is not recommended to stack them more than two layers high.
The berries should not be packed too tightly together.
After that, the containers are placed in the refrigerator.
Thanks to the absorption of excess moisture by the napkins, the berries will last a few days longer than in a regular bucket.
However, no method will extend the shelf life of fresh strawberries for more than 3-4 days.
