How to Explain Parents' Divorce to a Child?

Advice from psychologist Jadwiga MONICH.

- Parents' divorce is always a difficult situation, especially for children who love both their mom and dad. In their perception, divorce can be seen as the loss of one parent. Try to prepare the child for the father's absence, for example, under the pretext of business trips. Say, “Dad has gone on a work trip but will be back soon.” This explanation will be acceptable. When the child starts to calmly accept the father's absence, you can say, “During the divorce, Dad will see you just as he did before. We will both love you, and nothing will change for you. We can live under one roof and be unhappy, or we can live separately and be happy.”

By this time, the child will likely have already adapted to the periodic absence of the father and will perceive this information more easily. Discuss the issue of divorce with them in a trusting conversation, saying, “Dear, you are still little and cannot understand why Mom and Dad cannot live together. But when you grow up, you will understand our decision.”
