Growing cabbage is not difficult, but achieving a truly tasty and large harvest requires careful planning.
To successfully grow cabbage, it is not enough to simply plant seedlings in the open ground, water them regularly, and fertilize. There are several secrets that can help achieve large and tasty heads of cabbage.
Particular attention should be paid to preparing the bed for seedlings. This work is best started in the fall. Cabbage prefers soil with a neutral acidity level. Therefore, it is necessary to first measure the soil pH and then, if needed, lime it with dolomite flour or wood ash. This should be done in the fall, as applying such additives in the spring can negatively affect the plants.
It is also important to choose the right location for planting cabbage. Preference should be given to elevated areas, away from groundwater, as cabbage requires moderate moisture. At the same time, this crop needs a sufficient amount of sunlight. Try to find such a spot in your area.
In the spring, two weeks before planting cabbage, it is necessary to dig up the beds and remove all weeds. Before planting, it is important to ensure that the soil temperature is comfortable for the seedlings. If the spring is cold, you can cover the soil with special material. It is better to plant along pre-marked rows — the distance between them should be at least 70 cm, and between the seedlings within the row — at least 50 cm.
