How to Prepare Clay Soil for Potato Planting?

How should the soil be treated for potatoes and other vegetable crops?

Potatoes prefer loose and breathable soil, as they require access to air for proper growth and tuber formation. A loose soil structure also reduces the mechanical resistance that young tubers face during growth. In compacted soil, tubers often end up small and irregularly shaped, which is especially noticeable in loamy and clayey soils.

Therefore, it is recommended to dig to a depth of 25–28 cm. This promotes the formation of a stronger and deeper root system, allowing plants to better cope with drought and accumulate more moisture in the soil. If the fertile layer in the area is insufficient, the transition to deep tillage should be gradual to avoid significant mixing of the cultivated layer with the infertile substrate.

In areas with clay and loamy soil, especially in conditions of excessive moisture in spring, it is beneficial to process the soil twice: first, as it dries, loosen the soil to a depth of 12–15 cm, and then, before planting, carry out deep tillage. The depth of tillage should be 3–4 cm less than during autumn digging, so that weed seeds, organic fertilizers, and plant residues buried in autumn do not end up on the surface.

In sandy and sandy loam soils during a dry spring, loosening should be done without turning the layer to maximize moisture retention. All spring soil preparation work for potatoes and other crops should be carried out timely and effectively. It is important to ensure that the soil has normal moisture, crumbles well, and does not stick, as working with overmoistened soil leads to the formation of unloosened layers, while dry soil leads to clods. In cloddy soil, tubers become deformed and lose their marketable qualities.
