Why are tomatoes called pomidors in the Russian language?

The word “pomidor” in the Russian language has Italian origins.

In Italian, pomi d’oro is the plural form of pomo d’oro, which translates to “golden apple.” This name originated because, until the end of the 18th century, tomatoes were grown in Europe exclusively as ornamental plants, and their bright and large fruits gave them a special appeal.

These fruits were not used in cooking, as they were considered inedible and even poisonous. It was as an ornamental plant that the tomato came to Russia, along with its Italian name. In most European languages, the name “tomato” (tomato, tomate, etc.) has become established, which comes from the word “tomatl,” which the Aztecs used to refer to this plant when they introduced it into agriculture.
