Not Just Garlic and Raspberries! Foods to Strengthen the Immune System – Dietitian's Tips

The human immune system is a key defender of the body. It protects us from viruses, bacteria, and fungi. Nutrition specialist and certified dietitian Rhiannon Lambert shares recommendations on foods that help strengthen immunity.

Rhiannon Lambert claims that there is no single food that can serve as a universal remedy against viruses. She highlighted several categories of foods that positively affect the immune system. To achieve the best effect, it is important to include a variety of foods from different groups in the diet.

“First and foremost, I would mention probiotics and foods rich in them. Sauerkraut, yogurts, and kefir contain essential bacteria that significantly improve digestive health. It is the proper functioning of the intestines that ensures 70% of the normal functioning of the immune system. Next on the list are foods containing antioxidants. They help the immune system by reducing inflammation and oxidative stress. Such foods include spinach, carrots, broccoli, nuts, as well as raspberries, blueberries, citrus fruits, and dark chocolate,” says Rhiannon Lambert.

She also emphasizes the importance of garlic, which has bactericidal properties due to allicin and helps fight viruses and bacteria, as reported by The Sun.

Additionally, the dietitian highlights echinacea as another immune-boosting product.

“Some studies show that echinacea may help reduce the severity and duration of cold symptoms by activating the immune system and providing a mild anti-inflammatory effect. Ginger can also be used for prevention, as it has a long history of use in the medicine of various cultures and has repeatedly proven its effectiveness,” adds Rhiannon Lambert.

In conclusion, she reminds us of the importance of maintaining adequate hydration, recommending the consumption of plenty of water or herbal tea.
