On November 30, Orthodox Christians honor the memory of Gregory the Miracle Worker. In the folk tradition, he was nicknamed the Winter Indicator — based on the weather on this day, people judged what the winter would be like.
Thus, the weather from morning until noon should correspond to the first half of winter, and from noon until evening — the second.
Usually, by the end of November, a lot of snow would fall. On Gregory's day, people celebrated the arrival of the northern wind, held folk festivities, and children and adults would ride down hills on sleds, believing that if they slid further than the others — they would be the happiest in the coming year, and if they tumbled well in the snow — they would be the healthiest.
