Folk Omens for October 29 — Longinus the Centurion

October 29 is commemorated in Orthodoxy as the day of Longinus, the Roman centurion who pierced the side of the crucified Jesus Christ with a spear.

The Church venerates Longinus as a martyr: after the death of Christ, he became a Christian ascetic and was executed on the orders of Pilate.

This day is associated with a number of customs and signs aimed at protection from misfortunes and attracting health and warmth for the winter.

The customs of the day include taking winter clothing outside for airing. It was believed that clothing aired in the first frost would warm better during the cold months and help maintain health. It was also customary to place thorny plants or metal objects (such as rakes) near the gates to ward off evil spirits.

Furthermore, it was believed that on this day one should not quarrel or speak ill, as this could attract misfortune. Women were advised to avoid work that strained their eyesight and to refrain from divination to not scare away luck and love.

Weather signs for October 29 help predict upcoming changes. For example:

If the moon is dim and pale — this indicates snowfall and frosts.
A clear and starry night sky indicates sunny weather the next day, while a cloudy sky foreshadows precipitation.
