The Feast of the Protection. Why Our Ancestors Planted Garlic Only on This Date in October

In the peasant world, it has long been believed that winter garlic should be planted specifically on the Feast of the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos. There was even a saying: "before lunch — autumn, after lunch — winter." Therefore, gardeners rushed to complete all planting tasks during this period.

In 2024, the Feast of the Protection (October 14) falls on a Tuesday. Of course, it is unlikely that employers will allow working gardeners to leave for their plots for the sake of garlic, but Sunday, October 12, would be perfect.

Our ancestors believed that if one planted garlic on these dates, the harvest would indeed be large and tasty. Moreover, such garlic typically stores well — whether this is a coincidence or not, the fact remains.

"What, you didn’t know that garlic should be planted on the Feast of the Protection? You’ll always have a good harvest! Oh, the young ones," lamented my 86-year-old gardening neighbor.

So, try to do this this year; it certainly won’t hurt. You’ll also check whether the omen works or not.

What Else Can Be Done on the Feast of the Protection

The Feast of the Protection is a Christian holiday, so it is customary to prepare treats and invite guests on this day. It was believed that the kinder and more hospitable a person was, the more abundance they would have in the future.

Our ancestors believed that one should also treat the Domovoi with delicacies on the Feast of the Protection. They would place a bowl of goodies in the corner to appease the household spirit and receive support from it.

Christians also believed that if on October 14, one heated the stove with branches from fruit trees, it would be warm and cozy in the hut during winter.

What Should Not Be Done

There are things that should not be done on the Feast of the Protection under any circumstances. For example, conducting a general cleaning and washing in the house.

Quarreling and scandals on October 14 were also considered a great sin. And alcohol on the table could signify impending trouble.
