Often parsley, dill, or lettuce leaves lose their freshness within a day of purchase. However, by knowing a few simple tips, you can extend their shelf life, experts say.
You have probably encountered a situation where the fresh greens you bought, placed in the refrigerator, do not look as appealing the next day. According to nutrition expert and chef Christine Marr, leafy lettuce spoils the fastest, reports Doctorpiter.
“The reason is that greens need moisture to stay fresh. However, our refrigerators often do not provide enough, which leads to rapid wilting,” notes the expert.
To keep greens fresh, Christine Marr recommends using special zip-lock bags that many housewives use for freezing fruits and vegetables. However, an important point is to add paper towels to the bag.
“Separate the leaves from the stems, then place them in a vacuum bag. Don’t forget to add paper towels — they will absorb excess moisture. As a result, the greens won’t get soggy, and there won’t be any slime on the leaves,” says the specialist.
As for parsley, dill, or cilantro, the same recommendations apply. A vacuum bag is perfect for storing them.
