Scientists Prove That Moderate Meat Consumption Is Less Harmful to the Environment Than Veganism

People who prefer to abstain from animal products, known as vegans, often believe that they are also helping to protect the environment by reducing the scale of animal husbandry, which is one of the largest sources of greenhouse gases.

However, the research by Amy Trauger from the University of Georgia in the United States indicates that veganism may cause more harm to the planet than it seems. The study was published in the Journal of Political Ecology.

In particular, during her research, the specialist found that many protein-rich products used by vegans as substitutes for animal products are grown in southern countries, namely India, Malaysia, and Nigeria. It is noted that large areas of forests are cut down every year for the production of such products, and these productions may also be associated with human rights violations.

The researcher also pointed out that not all forms of animal husbandry are detrimental to the environment. Trauger's work states that if the consumption of animal products decreases, small local farms with short supply chains could facilitate the enforcement of animal and worker rights by law enforcement and animal protection advocates.

In the scientist's opinion, by reducing the harm done to animals in agriculture, vegans inadvertently harm the inhabitants of deforested areas and the residents of poor countries.
