An Affordable Alternative: What to Substitute for Red Fish at Breakfast

According to the expert, herring is no worse than red fish.

Breakfasts with sandwiches made of red fish are a common thing for many. However, as it turns out, herring can be an excellent substitute. It is important to consider the impact of these products on health, as noted by dietitian and nutritionist Tamila Maksyukh on her Instagram.

Which Fish to Choose for Breakfast

According to the expert, herring is no worse than red fish.

The fat content in salmon is 20.5 g per 100 g, while in herring it is 20.6 g per 100 g. The caloric content of these types of fish is almost identical: 257 kcal/100 g for salmon and 253 kcal/100 g for herring. Thus, they are practically equal in terms of healthy fats. Additionally, herring is significantly cheaper. The dietitian emphasized that breakfast should be protein-fat, so any fat component can be chosen.

Herring is rich in beneficial fatty acids that help lower cholesterol levels in the blood. Moreover, the fat in herring helps reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. The antioxidants found in herring are beneficial for strengthening the immune system.

Omega-3 fatty acids present in red fish reduce the likelihood of atherosclerosis, help normalize cholesterol levels, make skin and hair more elastic and radiant, as well as aid in fighting inflammation and strengthening immunity.

“Try to include herring in your breakfast — it can be an interesting experiment. You deserve to get the most beneficial, so start making changes in your life right now,” the message states.

Who Should Avoid Eating Herring and Red Fish

Salted herring can be harmful to people with hypertension, as salt contributes to increased blood pressure. It is also not recommended to consume herring in cases of kidney and bladder diseases.

Red fish should be introduced into the diet with caution in the presence of food intolerances, as well as liver and gallbladder problems.

Furthermore, it is important to choose red fish correctly so that it does not harm the body.
