The TasteAtlas encyclopedia has compiled a ranking of the 100 least popular dishes in the world. The Kurzeme sklandrausis ranked fourth in the anti-rating.
“Sklandrausis is a round Latvian pie that has been made in these parts since the 16th century. The dough made from unleavened rye flour is rolled into discs and shaped so that the edges are turned upwards.
The filling made of potatoes and carrots is layered, and after assembling, the pie can be brushed with cream and sprinkled with cinnamon or caraway seeds. It is recommended to consume it cold, in combination with tea or milk,” the dish description states.
Interestingly, Russian aspic ranks 67th in the anti-rating.
“Aspic is a traditional Russian dish made of meat and gelatin. It is believed to have become popular in the 19th century, and at that time it was mainly consumed by servants.
Aspic is served as an appetizer, and it is recommended to pair it with horseradish, a small portion of spicy Russian mustard, and a glass of vodka,” the guide claims.
In addition, the Yakut salad “Indigirka” made it to the list of least popular dishes, ranking 31st. This dish consists of frozen fish cut into cubes, onions, oil, salt, and pepper. The leader of the ranking according to TasteAtlas is the Icelandic delicacy Hákarl. This is partially decomposed shark meat that is fermented for three months.
