It is no secret that regular alcohol consumption negatively affects a person's personality. From a scientific perspective, constant alcohol use can lead to thinning of the cerebral cortex and deterioration of cognitive functions. Alcohol enthusiasts exhibit memory and intelligence impairments, making it difficult to make sound decisions.
However, the study showed that brain cells, unlike nerve cells, are capable of regeneration. This was established by American scientists who conducted research using MRI on people with alcohol dependence at various stages of their sobriety. As a result, it was found that upon quitting alcohol, the thickness of the cerebral cortex recovers, reaching its original values.
How long does it take to cleanse the body of alcohol
Scientists noted that the greatest recovery of the brain occurs in the first month of sobriety. After that, the process slows down but does not stop. After just 7.3 months without alcohol, there are no longer any damages in the brain caused by alcohol abuse.
However, these results cannot be generalized for everyone. For example, people with high blood pressure or elevated cholesterol levels will experience a slower thickening of the cortex. Recovery will also slow down for smokers, but quitting this harmful habit may accelerate the process.
Now scientists plan to expand their research to correlate the neurocognitive and psychosocial consequences of recovery.
