Not mors and not tea — experts named the drink for protection against colds

Experts advise not to forget about vaccination and to strengthen the body's natural defenses through nutrition.

It is recommended not only to eat more vegetables and fruits but also to add fermented dairy products to the diet. This advice was shared by Doctor of Medical Sciences Andrey Tyazhelnikov.

How kefir strengthens immunity

Doctor Tyazhelnikov explained that kefir and other probiotic products help the body resist viruses. It is sufficient to consume "fermented dairy products" at least 4–5 times a week, and even better — every day.

Live bacteria help the immune system by maintaining the balance of gut microflora. Up to 70% of the immune system's cells are concentrated in this organ, so the stronger the microbiome, the lower the chances of catching a virus or facing complications after an illness.

Along with probiotics, kefir is rich in:

calcium;
protein;
vitamins B2, B12, D, and K;
potassium and magnesium;
organic acids.

When and how to drink kefir

The popular tradition of drinking kefir at night has been known since Soviet times; however, modern doctors believe that the drink is better absorbed in the first half of the day or after lunch. This reduces the load on the gastrointestinal tract and helps absorb calcium and protein.

One glass (200 ml) of kefir or unsweetened ryazhenka per day is sufficient.

What to replace kefir with if you don't like it

Probiotics can be obtained from both fermented dairy products and other sources. Here are some alternatives to kefir that still provide benefits.
