In the Refrigerator or in the Pantry? The Chef Has Found the Best Place to Store Nuts

Nuts "live" long, but not forever. Sometimes they develop a rancid taste or unpleasant aroma — the mistake lies in violating storage conditions.

An expert from the Martha Stewart portal explained where nuts can last not just for months, but for years.

Nuts – in the refrigerator

According to chef and culinary instructor Richard LaMarita, room temperature is completely unsuitable for nuts. When stored in warmth for a long time, the fats in their composition oxidize. In such conditions, the product does not spoil for only 1–2 months.

Nuts can be preserved for 4–6 months if transferred to the refrigerator. In the cold, the breakdown of beneficial fats slows down. The same happens in the freezer. Frozen nuts can be stored for 1 year or longer.

What to Store Nuts In

The chef recommended not to leave nuts in store-bought bags. Factory packaging allows air and odors to penetrate. He suggested transferring nuts to glass jars or containers with tightly sealing lids.

If you buy nuts in bulk, keep the main portion in the freezer, and as needed, transfer small portions to the refrigerator.

Which Nuts Last Longer

Not all nuts have the same shelf life. The following stay fresh longer:

  • almonds;
  • pistachios;
  • walnuts.

"If you accidentally eat spoiled nuts, your health won't be harmed, but it is extremely unpleasant," concluded LaMarita.
