Sweets Can Dull Physical and Emotional Pain, Scientists Reported

A new study from the University of Technology Sydney (Australia) showed that cravings for chocolate or pastries are often an attempt to cope with pain.

According to scientists, 2 out of 3 people with chronic pain comfort themselves with food, most often choosing sweets or pastries. Endocrinologist Zuhra Pavlova noted that this phenomenon has a clear explanation — the body indeed responds to the taste of sweetness with a release of dopamine and serotonin, providing long-awaited relief.

Why Food Helps to Forget About Pain

The study showed that each participant in the experiment had their own reason for their dependence on sweets:

51% of participants admitted that food simply makes them happy;
49% try to distract themselves from pain;
39% eat to numb stress and anxiety.

When a person faces chronic pain, their nervous system is in constant tension. Sources of sugar become a kind of sedative. However, the effect of such "painkillers" is short-lived. Gradually, a vicious circle forms.

"The habit of 'eating away' pain often leads to weight gain, and extra pounds, in turn, exacerbate the pain," the doctor explained. How to Break the Sweet Dependency

According to Pavlova, the first step is to track the moment when you start eating due to emotions or pain sensations, rather than hunger. Then, you should test other ways to alleviate the condition. Usually, the following help:

warmth (heating pad, bath, blanket);
movement (light walk or stretching);
breathing practices and short meditation;
conversations with loved ones and specialists.

In addition, proper nutrition can reduce inflammation and, consequently, the intensity of pain. The diet should include fatty fish, vegetables with antioxidants (such as broccoli and spinach), whole grains, and sufficient fluids — plain water or herbal teas.
