A bear was spotted in Jekabpils, having entered the city area.
A bear was spotted in Jekabpils, having entered the city area. This was reported by the chairman of the Jekabpils City Council, Raivis Ragainis. According to him, the situation was being monitored by municipal and State police officers. Measures were being taken to safely lead the animal out of the populated area.
For this purpose, loudspeakers were used to try to guide the bear back into the forest. It is not yet reported whether the animal has been successfully removed from the city.
Authorities urge residents not to approach the bear and not to attempt to interact with it on their own. It is especially emphasized that one should not chase the animal for photos or videos for social media.
According to Ragainis, the increased attention from people can complicate the work of the services and hinder the animal from leaving the city on its own.
The chairman noted that the bear was in an unfamiliar environment and was likely disoriented. In such situations, the behavior of a wild animal becomes less predictable, creating risks for both people and the animal itself.
What is important to know: in recent years, the population of brown bears in Latvia has been gradually increasing, so reports of these animals appearing near populated areas are becoming more frequent. However, encounters with bears directly in urban environments remain rare.
Ragainis also pointed out that aggressive pursuit of the animal could lead to undesirable consequences.
"Let it leave the city on its own," he urged residents.
At this time, there have been no reports of injuries or any incidents involving the bear. The police continue to monitor the situation and urge citizens to remain calm, avoid the area where the animal has been spotted, and report its movements to the responsible services.
