One of the victims of the serious accident in Vecmilgravis stated that after the BMW hit, he lost his leg and is now preparing for a long rehabilitation. The man intends to seek compensation through lawyers and believes that safety issues with parking near the store may have contributed to the tragedy.
After a serious accident in Vecmilgravis, new details about the condition of the victims have emerged. One of the men, who was pinned against the wall of a building by a BMW, lost his leg and will now be disabled for life.
Denis is currently in the hospital and is trying to recover from the ordeal. In a conversation with the show Degpunktā (TV3), he admitted that he barely had time to understand what happened.
“I came out of the store, I didn’t understand anything, it all happened quickly. A strong blow — and I lost my leg,” the man said.
According to him, help arrived very quickly. The police were the first to arrive at the scene, followed almost immediately by two ambulances.
“Some people were helping, coming up, calling for an ambulance,” Denis recalls.
Three people were injured in the accident — two men and a woman. The second victim turned out to be Denis's friend. He was luckier: doctors were able to save his leg after severe muscle damage.
The woman, who also sustained injuries, was passing by and was not acquainted with the men.
The condition of the victims remains serious, and recovery is progressing slowly. In addition to physical rehabilitation, the individuals also require psychological support.
Denis says he has not yet received any apologies from the BMW driver or his relatives.
“At least his relatives could have come, cooperate somehow, visit, but so far nothing is known,” he says.
The man intends to consult lawyers and seek compensation through the courts.
Moreover, he has complaints not only against the perpetrator of the accident but also against the organization of parking near the store. According to Denis, the pedestrian zone was virtually not separated from the roadway, and basic safety measures could have mitigated the consequences of the accident.
“There are no curbs, no rubber barriers in the parking lot, there isn’t even any marking for where cars should park,” the victim stated.
Now the man faces a long rehabilitation process and the installation of a leg prosthesis.
The trading company informed the show Degpunktā that after the accident, they are considering possible safety improvements near the store on Baltasbaznicas Street. However, no specific decisions have been announced yet.
The tragedy in Vecmilgravis has once again raised the issue of parking safety near stores and how protected pedestrian zones are from vehicles in case of driver error.
